Nancy Speed Schutz, a local musician, 84, of Chattanooga, TN, passed away on Sunday, January 21. She was born in Chattanooga on June 3, 1933. She attended Indiana University on a full music scholarship where she earned her Bachelor of Music Education and her Masters in Violin Performance. While at IU, she traveled internationally soloing on the violin with The Belles of Indiana. She met her husband, Paul Schutz, who was also a music major at IU. After travelling in Europe with her husband, who was in the Military, she settled in Chattanooga, raised her family, taught music in the public school system, and played 1st violin for The Chattanooga Symphony and The Opera Orchestra. She maintained a private violin studio where she taught students of all ages.
She was preceded in death by her father Lonnie Speed, mother Mary Sue Speed, her husband Paul F Schutz, and her son Kevin Schutz.
Survivors include her daughters, Karen Schutz, Kristin Schutz, and her brother Wallace Speed.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church at 2:00 with visitation at 1:00 on January 27 with Rev. Pat Cahill. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be paid to St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church.
