Florence "Madeleine" (Nolan) Rogers

Florence Madeleine Nolan Rogers, 75, of Chattanooga passed from this life on March 7, 2019 after a brief, but spirited, battle with cancer. A nurturing mother, doting grandmother ("Nana"), reliable sibling and loyal and loving friend, Madeleine will always be remembered for her sharp sarcastic wit, her warm smile, her unwavering support, and for the impact that she made on the more than one thousand students whom she taught over her 40+ year teaching career at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School between 1969 and 2009. 

A native of Chattanooga, Madeleine graduated from Notre Dame High School, received a Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in Sociology from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (1967) and a Masters of Education Degree with a Major in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Guidance and Counseling K-8 from Trevecca Nazarene University (1990). Teaching was her life's calling and Madeleine found great joy in watching her former students reach milestones and achievements long after they left her classroom. 

She is survived by her only son, Shawn Rogers Nolan, his wife Laura, and grandchildren, Watts Anthony Nolan and Andie Chapel Nolan all of Chapel Hill, NC;  siblings, Joseph Nolan of Christiansburg, VA; Michael Nolan and wife, Madeena of Cincinnati, OH; Mary Lou Holland of Chattanooga, TN;  Gabie McLeroy and husband, Ray of Knoxville, TN;  Andy Nolan and wife, Suzanne of Lookout Mountain, GA; Danny Nolan of Chattanooga, TN; and Martha Nolan and husband, Ben of Chattanooga, TN. She is also survived by godchildren Summer Nolan of Raleigh, NC; Scott McLeroy of Kansas City, KS; David Nolan of Cincinnati, OH; and Link Klassen of Chattanooga, TN; as well as a large extended family of nieces, nephews and their children.   

A celebration of Madeleine’s life will be held at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Friday, March 29, 2019, at 11am with Father Jim Vick and Father Mike Nolan officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the OLPH Parish Life Center. Madeleine will be laid to rest in the Mount Olivet Cemetery next to her parents, Joseph Patrick Nolan and Florence Brownlee Nolan.

The family wishes to give special thanks to all the caregivers at Hospice of Chattanooga and BrightStar Care for all the love and care showed to Madeleine, especially Katrina, Mandy, Denise and Carolyn. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Madeleine’s memory to the OLPH Annual Fund or Hospice of Chattanooga.
