Obituary

Barbara Jean Clay, a beloved mother, grandmother, and community trailblazer, passed away on May 30, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on September 7, 1932, Barbara lived a life defined by dedication, service, and love for her family and community.

Barbara made history as the first meter maid hired in the City of Chattanooga in May 1961, breaking barriers and paving the way for others. She went on to serve her country through the United States Post Office from 1971 until her retirement in 1998 as a Supervisor-a testament to her strong work ethic and leadership.

A faithful woman, Barbara was a devoted member of New United Missionary Baptist Church, where she found community and spiritual strength throughout her life.

Barbara was preceded in death by her grandfather, Sing Lee; grandmother, Grussie Lee; father, Johnny Williams; mother, Margaret Valenzuela; brother, Charles M. Williams; grandson, Maurice Moore; and devoted nephew, Randall Adams.

Barbara is lovingly survived by her children: daughter Linda Clay of Antioch, TN; daughter Renee Poe of Chattanooga, TN; son Walter Clay of Chattanooga, TN; and daughter Danita (Winfred) Moore of Chattanooga, TN.

She is also survived by four granddaughters: Azize, Adrienne, Monica, and Jazmin; and 13 great-grandchildren.
