Obituary

Daisy Barbara Valenzuela Vives passed away aged 58 on August 11, 2025 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. She was born on December 4th, 1966 in La Habana, Cuba to Carlos Manuel Alejandro Valenzuela (father) and Olivia Vives (mother). From a young age, Daisy brought joy to those around her, excelling in social and cultural activities like dancing, acting, and event planning. She was adventurous, decisive, positive, and reliable. Many of the friends she made in her pre-college years remained in touch with her until she passed away. At 15, she met Luis Oconnor Carballo, her first boyfriend and only husband, whom she married after five years of courtship. It was a miracle for them to become parents to Roger Oconnor Valenzuela, their only child. Daisy and Luis' love story spanned over four decades that were filled with love, joy, and forbearance. They were divorced for little over a year and it was during this time of separation that Daisy found Jesus through her aunt Irma Vives. Suspicious and thinking that Daisy had fallen in love with someone in church, Luis started attending worship services regularly. He, too, fell in love with the Lord, just like Daisy had. They remarried and were baptized into the Seventh-Day Adventist Church not long after. Daisy and Luis decided to serve God and His people full-time late in their thirties. They involved their teenage son in this decision and inspired him to preach and serve the church from a very young age. From 2003 to 2014, the Oconnor family pastored churches in La Habana and Pinar del Río, leaving behind them an unparalleled legacy of pastoral care and a desire to do God's mission. Between 2014 and 2023 they also served at Seminario Teológico Adventista de Cuba (SETAC) in diverse responsibilities. Daisy blessed everyone she came in contact with: neighbors, church members, SETAC students and colleagues, even total strangers. This legacy of love and service continued when Daisy and Luis moved to the United States in 2023. In everyone she met, Daisy instilled a desire to love others. She did so by living out the divine and biblical principles outlined in 1 Corinthians 13. We honor her memory by quoting Paul's timeless description of selfless love when he wrote: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails" (vv. 4-8a). A "Celebration of Life" to honor and remember Daisy will take place on Saturday, August 30th, 2025, at 5:00 pm at Iglesia de La Comunidad 6435 Lee Highway, Chattanooga, TN 37421. We look forward to hugging Daisy again on that glorious morning when we will meet He Who is Love!
