Dr. Gerald Isom
Jones
January 30, 1933 – August 6, 2021
Dr. Gerald (Gerry) Isom Jones died August 6, 2021 at the age of 88 from complications of Parkinsons disease.
He was predeceased by his parents, John David Jones and Emma Isom Jones; two sisters, Stella Jones Huffman (Paul) and Mildred Jones Scott (Irving); three brothers, Milton Jones (Joan), Jack Jones (Dalah), and Thurman Jones, and grandson, John Gajewski.
Gerry is survived by Joy Jones, his wife of 65 years, and children, Andrew Jones, Charles Jones (Carla Askonas), and Laura Noyes (Keith). He is also survived by nine grandchildren, James West (Bonnie), Virginia Gajewski, Serena Gajewski, Mark Gajewski, Hannah Jones (Roger Brothers), Carolyn Jones, Alice Jones, Ellen Askonas and Elise Askonas, and great-grandchildren, Evelyn Lee and Adelaide West.
Gerry was born in Manchester, TN and graduated from Manchester Central High School. As a senior, he was captain of the football team, a delegate to Tennessee Boys State, and an Eagle Scout. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and UT Medical School in Memphis. After internship in Chattanooga, he served in the Air Force as a flight surgeon.
His residency was in Chattanooga. He practiced Ob/Gyn for 33 years and delivered thousands of babies during his career. He loved his work and his empathy for his patients made him beloved by generations of women. In addition to caring for patients, Gerry was chief of Ob/Gyn at Erlanger for four years, served on the first board for North Park Hospital, and worked as Chief of Staff at North Park.
Geralds character and accomplishments were reflected in his volunteer work throughout his life. He served for a decade as the Family Promise coordinator for Grace Episcopal Church and after retirement saw patients through Volunteers in Medicine. After being active for many years in the United Methodist Church, he became a member of Grace Episcopal Church in 1995. Gerald also served as Senior Warden.
Gerald loved to travel. He and Joy were both small plane pilots, and Gerry used his plane to assist others as a volunteer for Angel Flight. Joy and Gerry were avid bridge players including bridge in many of their travelsand attaining Silver Life Master status. Always active, Gerald loved to play tennis and golf. He also loved other games, and while a good sport, loved to actually win.
Admired for maintaining his good sense of humor until the very end, people who knew Gerry will all testify to his personal warmth and kindness. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make a donation to the charity of their choice. The family wishes to express gratitude to Hospice of Chattanooga for their excellent and loving care.
The Rev. April Berends, Rev. Susan Butler and Rev. David Burman will conduct the memorial service which will be held Saturday the 14th of August, 2021, 2:30 pm (visitation 1:00-2:15), at Grace Episcopal Church, reception to follow. Masks will be required for the indoor portions of the service.
