Dr. Harry Richard 'Dick' Schussler, Sr., 87 went home to be with the Lord Saturday, January 3, 2015.
He was born October 10, 1927 in McMurray Township, Pennsylvania. He served in the United States Army Air Force from 1945-1947, then returned to marry Bonnie Stover. He attended Stetson University in Deland, Florida and Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga receiving a degree in music. He went on to serve as minister of music and youth director in Decatur, Alabama; Spring Lake, Michigan; Farmington, Michigan and Bradenton, Florida; returning to Chattanooga in 1974 to pursue his doctorate degrees in Christian and secular education from TTU. He served the school administrator in Covington, Kentucky; Alexandria, Virginia; Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. Dick and Bonnie returned to Chattanooga in 1988 opening Harmony House Music. He served as minister of music at Brainerd Presbyterian then East Ridge Presbyterian retiring in 2011 at age 84 Dr. Schussler's hobbies included reading, gardening and vintage automobiles. He was a lifelong fan of Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. He loved time spent with his family, most of all his walk with Christ.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry Harrison and Laura Schussler; brothers, Dale and Don Schussler; sisters, Jean Palmer and Ruth Boyd and his loving wife of 60 years, Bonnie.
Survivors include sister, Marion Shook of Quincy, Florida; sons, H. Richard, Jr. and David L. (Dawn) of Chattanooga; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Many thanks to his caregivers, Hospice of Chattanooga, Nephrology Associates and Dr. Nilesh Patel.
The family will receive friends at Brainerd Presbyterian church on Monday, January 5 from 5 -7 p.m. and 11 - 12 p.m. on Tuesday. The Rev. Ron Ragon and the Rev. Jonathan Schwartz will conduct the service at noon in the church on Tuesday, January 6.
Interment will be at Chattanooga national Cemetery.
