Obituary

Ina Madge (Youngberg) Longway died June 25, 2024, in her home in Collegedale, Tennessee. She was born at the stroke of midnight in Singapore; her nurse, whose birthday was the new day, declared her to be born on February 17, 1925. Ina's parents, Gustavus Benson Youngberg and Norma (Rhoads) Youngburg welcomed her. Her siblings were Ruth, Robert, Rhoda, then Ina, and later James and Benjamin. Ina grew up in the jungles of Southeast Asia learning to speak both Malay and English. Her family lived in Sumatra, Indonesia then on the Tatau river on the island of Borneo, living near former headhunters, ritual cannibals, crocodiles, and tigers. They were the first white people to be seen by any of these people. Ina was always an excellent storyteller; she used this skill even as a child to get the housework done: she told stories, and her siblings did the work and all were satisfied. She witnessed her parents teach these people of the God who cared for them. She also saw her parents teach sustainable farming practice, gave vaccinations, and treat endemic malaria and ringworm, as well as other illnesses. When Ina was 15 years old, her family set sail back to the United States as World War II started. After settling his family in La Sierra, California, her father returned to Borneo when the mission station called him back. Gus was taken prisoner there by the Japanese and died as a prisoner of war. Ina's mother, left to raise six children on her own, took to writing children's books. In addition, she taught writing and edited many books. Ina fell in love with and married Milton E Longway. They were married for some 60 plus years. They had seven children and adopted an eighth: Laurie (Rick -deceased), Ernie (Clover), Leonard (deceased), Robin, Charles (Ilona), Lucia (Robert), Ruth (Richard), and Paul. Ina had 12 grandchildren: Lynette, Laureen, Kassi, Twila, Justin, Shaina, Lucas, Natasha, Nicholas, Jessica, Miles, and Joshua. Ina had 19 great grandchildren: Patrick, Louis, Daphnee, Sabrina, Kate, Brayden, Tristin, Jace, Kai, Serenity, Ari, Claire, Isabelle, Letty, Noa, Jasmine, Vasher, Micah, and Phoenix. Ina attended her first formal schooling at La Sierra College in Riverside, CA graduating from high school at the top of her class. Ina earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, CA, her Master of Science in Nursing at San Jose State University in San Jose, CA, and her Doctorate in Nursing Science at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, AL. Ina worked as a nurse's aid, nurse, teacher, nursing school coordinator, and director of nursing. She also did consulting for many schools to convert their nursing programs to a 2 2 program, where nursing students could earn an associate degree which applied directly to their bachelor's degree. Ina also wrote academic papers and books, and edited countless theses and dissertations. For the last 15 of Ina's working years, she helped in the start-up of a new advanced degree university in Southeast Asia: Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies (AIIAS). She lived first in Thailand creating the curriculum and student base until the campus was built in the Philippines. AIIAS now has over 200 graduate students from 80 countries. While at AIIAS, Ina raised funds and oversaw the building of the campus center piece: the bell tower. She also acquired and oversaw the planting of 100 mahogany trees so the campus would have a cash crop in the future, as an insurance policy if money was tight. Ina also established the campus clinic. Ina spent many years working with the Pathfinder youth organization, teaching and creating honors. She was a Master Guide and went on many campouts, even into her 70's! In her later years she sewed many honor patches on sashes for a new crop of Pathfinders. She participated in countless induction ceremonies; most recently she had the honor of inducting her own granddaughter. Throughout her life, Ina opened her home to family, friends, students, and strangers. Always an advocate for higher education, she taught, trained, housed and gave financial assistance to many students. Ina enjoyed writing poetry including the following: God of the Universe Thou God with mighty power has spread Across the vastness of space or' head A thousand million galaxies and more; Each one jewel-studded with uncounted orbs. Each sun speeds on in its appointed way Each adds fresh splendor to eternal day; How can this paltry earth on which I stand Expect the smallest bounty from Thy hand? How can a dark lost world adrift in space Deserve the slightest inflow of your grace? God of the galaxies, how can you care for me? One speck of dust adrift in space's sea But since you say you do, that must be true, The word of the One who runs the universe will do.
