Jack Washington Matthews, Jr., 89, a native of Bridgeport, Alabama and longtime Hixson resident went to be with the Lord on October 15, 2017. He retired from DuPont after 35 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Sue Paris Matthews; brothers Alfred, David, Clyde, Hershel, Willard, Jasper (Jappi), and Harold Matthews, and sister Pearl Turner.

Survivors include his brother, Hubert Matthews of Jacksonville, Alabama; sister Mary Ruth Knopp, of Bridgeport, Alabama; son Dennis Matthews and his wife, Maria, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; daughter Vicki Walker of Odenville, Alabama; grandsons Rodney Walker and his wife, Amy, of Bryant, Alabama and Troy Allan Walker and his wife, Linda, of Lexington, South Carolina; four great grandchildren Oliva, Cameron, Morgan, Eden Walker, and numerous devoted nieces and nephews who supported him throughout his illness.

A longtime member of City Church of Chattanooga, Jack was a regular attendee and active in his Small Group. He enjoyed watching Alabama football, walking at the greenway, cutting grass, and raking leaves.

Visitation will be at City Church of Chattanooga, 7122 Lee Highway from 4-8 on Tuesday, October 17th and from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18th. Dr. Mike Chapman will conduct the service at 1 p.m. at City Church. Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
