John Clayton Burton, 89, of Hixson, Tennessee passed away peacefully on April 15, 2024.
Clayton was born in Sand Mountain, Alabama, September 23, 1934 to Grover and Grovie
(McClure) Burton. After his family relocated to Chattanooga, he attended Hixson schools and
graduated from Hixson High School Class of 1953.
While in the 5th grade at Hixson Elementary School, he noticed a special little girl named Patsy
on the playground and told his teacher he was going to marry that girl. They started dating in
high school and after graduation, they married and spent 68 wonderful years together.
After marrying Patsy, he attended Fairview United Methodist Church where he directed the choir
and led the worship services with his beautiful rich bass voice. In 1980, he moved his
membership to Hixson United Methodist Church where he joined the choir and became involved
in other church activities. He was a member of the Sammy Gooden Sunday School Class for 44
years.
For many years, Clayton worked at Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation. After AM closed
their doors in 1982, he went to work for Beeler Impression Products until his retirement in 2010.
Along with being an avid Tennessee Volunteer fan, Clayton loved music, boating, square
dancing and enjoyed following the NASCAR circuit.
Clayton was predeceased by his best friend and wife, Patsy Deakins Burton; his parents, Grover
and Grovie Burton; brothers Paul Burton and Dale Nelson Burton; sisters Dorothy Burton Smith
and Charlsie Jane Burton.
Surviving him are several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and family members,
all of whom he loved dearly.
The family would like to thank the staff of Red Bank Life Care for their support and care during
the final days of Clayton's life.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hixson United Methodist Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held with family and friends, Saturday, June 29, at Hixson
United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. The Reverends
Charles Starks and Mark Gooden will be officiating the service.
