Obituary

Ronald Wayne Herman, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away, surrounded by his loved ones, on November 23, 2024, at the age of 78. He was born on December 31, 1945, in Old Hickory, Tennessee, to James K. Herman Sr. and Charmain Manzano Herman. Throughout his life, Ron embodied dedication, service, and love for his family. As a child, he moved between California and Tennessee, experiencing a variety of cultures and communities that shaped his life's journey. He graduated from Madison Academy in 1964 and went on to attend Southern Missionary College, later earning his degree from Southwestern Union College in 1973. Ron married his loving wife, Linda Susan Voss, on November 23, 1969. Together, they built a life filled with adventure, love, and service to others. Their early years together were spent in Little Rock, Arkansas, where Ron taught grades 5-8, followed by a brief time in Memphis, Tennessee, where he attended optometry school. They then moved to Oklahoma City, where Ron spent five years teaching grades 7-9 at Parkview Junior Academy. In the 1980s, Ron and Linda moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where Ron became the administrator for Life Care Center of East Ridge for five years. They later relocated to Columbus, North Carolina, where they purchased and operated their own assisted living facility, Ridge Rest, for 43 years, raising their four children in this nurturing environment. After retiring, Ron and Linda moved back to Tennessee to be closer to their children and 10 grandchildren, enjoying their later years surrounded by family. Ron was a man of many interests, but one of his greatest joys was his little red 1963 Triumph TR3B that he got just before he started dating Linda, and the special joy it brought them. It became a treasured symbol of their relationship and a cherished part of his life. He often enjoyed driving his grandchildren around in the TR, which brought him both nostalgia and happiness. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, James and Charmain Herman, and his younger sister, Jeanie Smith. He is survived by his wife, Linda Herman; daughters Julie (Mike) Andrews, Amy (Travis) Hulsey; sons Russell Herman, and Ryan (Mindy) Herman; brothers Jim (Ellen) Herman and Gary (Dawn) Herman; brother-in-law Ron Smith; grandchildren Sarah and Marshall Andrews, Tristan, Isabella, and Zane Hulsey, and Hannah, Harley, Carter, Owen, and Amelia Herman; as well as several nieces and nephews. Ron's kindness, integrity, and commitment to his family and community will be deeply missed. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and dedication that will continue to inspire those who knew him. A memorial service will be held on January 4, 2025 at 3 p.m., at the Collegedale Community Church.
