Stephen Hugh Campbell, 79, of Chattanooga went home to Heaven on Saturday, September 17, 2016.

Steve was a story teller as well as the author of many practical jokes. He delighted in surprising his listeners, often telling jokes as if they had actually happened.

He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church and a Third Degree Knight of Columbus. Steve was an active leader for Boy Scout Troop 172 at St. Jude and was a former Scoutmaster. He taught the boys to make ropes and candles and to gem mine, which they did at Scout functions and the Hamilton County Fair. Steve volunteered many hours at St. Jude School and was recognized for outstanding service in 1995. He started the Parish aluminum recycling program that funded many Scout programs and activities at the school and was known as "The Can Man".

Steve grew up in Eau Claire, WI. He served four years in the Naval Reserve in the early 1960s. He moved to Chattanooga in 1968, as a superintendent for Turner Sign Company. He later started his own company, Campbell Sign, which he operated until 1984, when a back injury forced early retirement.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ernestine Campbell, and by his brothers George and Tom. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Beki Campbell; son Matt (Amy) Campbell, and grandchildren Stephen and Alli; son Robert (Mandy) Campbell and granddaughter Sadie; brother James (Sharron) Campbell of Sarona, WI; and sister-in-law Donna Campbell of Eloy, AZ, and beloved nieces and nephews.

The funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 23, at St. Jude Church. Visitation will be for one hour preceding the funeral, at St. Jude. A luncheon will be held after the funeral at the Parish Life Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Teen Challenge of Chattanooga, 1108 W. 33rd Street, Chattanooga, TN 37410.
