Betty Thompson McGraw, 79, of Hixson, passed away, Sunday, June 28, 2020. She was a great mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She loved to travel. She will be greatly missed.
She was born in northwest Alabama in a small farming community. Betty met James Earl McGraw on their 1957 senior trip to Washington, DC. They were married in 1958 at Betty’s parents’ home.
She was predeceased by her parents, Hollis Edward Thompson and Mary Magdalene Liverett; father-in-law, Aubrey Lee McGraw and mother-in-law, Annie Maud Venable.
Survivors include her sister, Joyce, Athens, AL; sons, Darrell (Pati), Byron; daughter, Holly (Gregory); grandchildren, Candice, Rachel, Jeannie, and Darian; one great-grandchild, Madison.
One of the most memorable family times included visiting Pensacola, FL, but not seeing the beach; taking our first plane ride over the Galveston, TX harbor; our 1970 family trip lasting five weeks, visiting 22 states, a Canadian province, and walking over the border to Tijuana, Mexico. Sites visited included Mt. Rushmore, Mt., Rainier, Washington, Mt. Hood, Oregon, the Pacific in California, flying over Yosemite park, downtown San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Hollywood, Redwood National Park, Knott's Berry Farm (Disneyland was taken over by yippies the day we were going to go!), Sea World, the Grand Canyon, Four Corners, crossing the Continental Divide a few times in the Rockies, Mesa Verda, Dogpatch and the Ozarks in Arkansas. We drove just under 10,000 miles on that trip and camped all, but one night.
