David Welsh Obituary

David (Dave) Scott Welsh, 57, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, in Chattanooga, TN after a two year battle with cancer.

He was a proud graduate of Penn State University. He began college initially as a scholar athlete in soccer at Penn State York.  Immediately after graduation he joined the U. S. Navy.  He served as a submariner and retired as a Lt Commander.  While in the Navy he received a Masters in Physics from the Naval Post-Graduate School in Monterey, California.   His final duty station was at Offutt, AFB in Nebraska.  He and his family moved from Nebraska to Chattanooga, Tennessee so that he could take advantage of the warmer weather and long growing season and pursue his lifelong joy in gardening. He initially worked with the Chattanooga Visitor and Convention Center Bureau as a computer specialist.  For 20 years he was a valuable member of the Riverbend Volunteer Team.  He was an avid gardener and shared his abundant crops with his church and neighborhood community.   While his daughter was enrolled at both the Normal Park Elementary and Upper School he clocked 250 volunteer hours yearly.  He also volunteered at the Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts aiding many seniors in algebra to meet their graduation requirement.  Throughout his life he was an avid stamp and coin collector.

He joined Cross of Christ Lutheran Church shortly after coming to Chattanooga where he played handbells, taught Sunday school to many children, and created memorable programs for presentation by the youth groups at Christmas and for VBS.  He also brought hope and joy to the entire community through his weekly message on the church’s message board.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sylvia Ness Welsh of York-New Salem, Pennsylvania and his brother, Donald Franklin Welsh, Jr. of Vancouver, Washington.

Survivors include his wife, Cara C. Welsh, daughter, Kara (K.C.) Welsh and his stepson, Joseph A. (Tyffani) Lynch, grandchildren, Harmony and Jaxon Lynch; his father, Donald F. Welsh of York-New Salem, Pennsylvania, brother, Dan Steven Welsh of Oviedo, Florida, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church on November 11th.
