Douglas Chandler Obituary

Douglas James Chandler, Sr. age 90 recently of Rock Spring, GA passed away quietly from Covid related complications on January 19, 2021. He was predeceased by his first wife Lorraine McDaniel Chandler, his sister Mary Wisener, and his daughter Deborah Chandler.  He is survived by his wife Alma Todd Dewey Chandler, his brother Richard Chandler, his children Roger Chandler (Gail), Douglas Chandler, Jr. (Greta), Stephen Chandler (Kathy), Alyson Chandler, 11 grandchildren, and 10 ½ great grandchildren. In addition the children of his second wife who number 5 step children and their spouses, 15 step grandchildren and several step great grandchildren.

Doug was born June 4, 1930 and was the oldest child of Edward Chandler and Virginia Key Chandler.  A native Floridian, he was also a proud graduate of the University of Florida. His degree in mechanical engineering led to an energetic career in both aerospace and confectionery and a passion for any vehicle with wheels and a motor.  He was humble in his achievements but his family was proud of his work as a lead fuel-handling system engineer on the first lunar lander. His efforts remain as a permanent memorial on the lunar surface. His expertise in handling dry fuel led to his second career with McKee Baking Company where he developed the handling and metering systems for the dry materials incorporated into Little Debbie confectioneries. He was a devout Seventh-day Adventist and during the entirety of his adult life served in many various leadership positions at every church that had an opportunity to enjoy him as a member. The final years of his life he was an active member at the Battlefield Community SDA Church in Ringgold, GA.  In retirement, he traveled the United States, spending as much time with his extended family as he could.

Throughout his life Doug was a great and caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His entire family mourns him deeply. A family funeral service is set at the Chattanooga National Cemetery at 1:30 PM on February 1st. A memorial for him will be held at a later date.
