Janice Elliott Obituary

Janice Katherine (Miller) Elliott, 67, passed from this life, peacefully, on Saturday, April 23, 2022 surrounded by her family that she loved so dearly.

Jan was born in Amarillo, Texas on October 30, 1954 to Earl and Wendy Miller. She later moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee where she graduated from East Ridge High School in 1972. She went on to attend UT Chattanooga where she was a member of the AD Pi Sorority.

Jan was a hard worker and put her heart and soul into everything she attempted. She dealt with life on her own terms and was tenacious as she was beautiful having the most contagious laugh and smile. She retired after 32 years with the State of Tennessee Tourism Department serving as South Eastern Tennessee Regional Manager.

One of her true obsessions began as a pastime, Genealogy. Researching her ancestor’s became a passion of Jan’s. She loved traveling across the United States visiting cemeteries in search of ancestors. This love of genealogy enabled her to join a long list of organizations, after providing her lineage for each one, which is no easy task. The following are some of the organizations she was an active member of: United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, National Society United States Daughters of 1812, First Families of Tennessee, The Society of Indiana Pioneers, Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, The Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manikin in the Colony of Virginia, National Society Descendants of American Farmers, Order of the Steel Magnolias, Descendants of Early Postmasters and National Society of the American Colonists.

Jan served as Regent for the Moccasin Bend Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution from 2019-2021. Her service and dedication to this organization will not be forgotten. She took great joy the last couple of years in assisting in the swearing in ceremonies for her daughter and two cousins.

On March 24, 1979, Jan married the love of her life, William Burt Elliott in Ringgold, Georgia. They recently celebrated 43 years of marriage.  Jan loved her husband and two children but her favorite familial role was that of “Mammy” to her two precious grandchildren.

Her brother, Dana Miller of San Francisco, California, precedes her in death.

She is survived by her husband William Burt Elliott of Chattanooga, Tennessee; son Brett (Emily) Elliott of Chattanooga, Tennessee; daughter Megan (Cody) Arnold of Chattanooga, Tennessee; grandchildren Cannon and Sadie Arnold of Chattanooga, Tennessee; father Earl (Judy) Miller of Edinburgh, Indiana; mother Wendy Griffith of Chattanooga, Tennessee, brother Adam Griffith of Chattanooga, Tennessee; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

There will be a graveside service for Jan at the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Friday, May 6, 2022 at 12:30 p.m. officiated by Reverend Jerry Yother. The family invites those, who wish to attend, to wear casual and vibrant colors to honor her life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to The Tennessee State Veterans Home of Cleveland, 1940 Westland Drive, SW, Cleveland, TN 37311.

Tributes may be left on the Covenant Funeral & Crematory website, covenantfuneral.com.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the following: Dr. Philip Smith and Dr. Eric Nelson and the staff at University Surgical Associates and Sherrie Sanders, RN Oncology GI Nurse Navigator for CHI Memorial Rees-Skillern Cancer Institute.
