Wayne Cecil Dewell

Wayne Cecil Dewell of Ooltewah, Tennessee, passed away on April 21, 2023, at the age of 75. Wayne was born on January 21, 1948, in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of Julian Dudley Dewell and Cassie Mae Brooks Dewell. Preceding Wayne in death are both his parents and a brother, Ricky Julian Dewell, and a niece.

He graduated from Newport News High School in 1968 and completed his education at Thomas Nelson Community College in 1978, earning an associate degree in applied science, specializing in Police Science.

Wayne served his country in the United States Army until honorably discharged on July 1, 1974. During his tour of duty in Vietnam, he was assigned to the Military Police and retired as a Sergeant.

After completing his military service and education, Wayne pursued a career in law enforcement. He served in the Newport News Police Department as an officer and detective and the Hamilton County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Department as a Court Services Officer.

Wayne additionally pursued a variety of roles in management and security services including Assistant Manager, Anheuser Busch Brewery Hospitality Center in Williamsburg, Virginia; Hotel Properties Officer in the Department of Safety and Security in Williamsburg; and Security Supervisor, Murray Guard, Inc. in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Of course, many of his friends know him from his employment and friendly presence at Burns Tobacconist shop in Chattanooga.

Wayne had a way of saying, “I’ve had an interesting life.” He will be greatly missed by the many friends he made along the way.

Services and interment with military honors for Wayne will be held at The National Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN on May 16, 2023, at 2:00 PM. Pastor Andy McRae will officiate. A celebration of life will take place June 2, 2023 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Burns Tobacconist, 110 Jordan Drive, Chattanooga, TN.
